Avram Grant was in talks to join Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls before returning to Fratton Park.
Grant rejoined Pompey this week after being installed as the club's new director of football.The former Chelsea manager will work closely with boss Paul Hart as Pompey attempt to climb off the foot of the Premier League table.However, according to his agent, Don Barnett, Grant had other options – including a combined head coach and sporting director role at the MLS side.

Old Firm must play in the Premier League
Martin Bain, the Rangers chief executive, thinks his club will be playing in a new league within a decade, and I hope he’s right.
It’s not about whether the Scottish Premier League can afford to lose Rangers and Celtic – it’s whether they can afford not to. The division is dying a slow death at the moment and it would be in the interests of its two biggest clubs and the rest if the Glasgow sides were allowed to compete in the Barclays Premier League.
At the moment, everyone’s struggling in Scotland and it can’t go on much longer. Something different must be tried and that means letting Rangers and Celtic compete in England. That’d be bound to upset plenty but it’s in the interests of football both north and south of the border.

English clubs cool Old Firm chat
The chairmen of English Premier League clubs Burnley and Stoke City have cast doubt over the possibility of the Old Firm joining England's top flight.
Celtic and Rangers have restated their desire to leave the Scottish Premier League in the future.
Burnley chairman Barry Kilby said the move would yield economic benefits.
But, while stating he was not against the idea, his Stoke City counterpart Peter Coates believes there is little appetite for it in England.
The Old Firm clubs said this week that they were keen to move away from the SPL in order to realise their potential.
At a meeting in November, the Premier League in England is to discuss the possibility of a two-tier set-up that could involve the Glasgow sides.

The Premier League is investigating Ali al-Faraj, the latest “saviour” of Portsmouth, and his backers before rubber-stamping the fourth foreign takeover at Fratton Park in 11 years.
The Football League has also asked for more details about the ownership of Notts County and Leeds United. County were bought three months ago by the mysterious investment group, QADBAK, while Ken Bates, the Leeds chairman, has admitted that he does not know who owns the Coca-Cola League One club.
Flavio Briatore, the controversial chairman of Queens Park Rangers, has been called, meanwhile, to give his account of the lifetime ban from Formula One he received after the “Crashgate” scandal, when Nelson Piquet Jr was told to crash his Renault to help Fernando Alonso, his team-mate, to win the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.
